Seasonal Fire Support Position(s)

Wenatchee Valley Fire Department is accepting letters of interest for seasonal staff to assist with Fire Adapted Community activities and Operations support. This position will be filled through an interview process established by the Fire Department.


Salary: $25.87 per hour. Benefits are not included.


Employment Term: Approximately, May 1, 2025 - October 31st, 2025 (not to exceed 5 months). Coordination of start/end dates will be determined upon successful applicants’ availability.


Schedule: The position is 40 hours per week.


Description: Following the guidance of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy, perform a variety of wildfire specific activities that assist our community to prepare, respond, and recover from future wildfire events. Provide support functions to the Operations Division.


Example of Duties: The duties listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be assigned and performed. The omission of specific statements does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related and/or a logical assignment to the classification.


  • Public Education and Events – Interact with citizens and provide information at a variety of public events and outreach opportunities.

  • Sidewalk Surveys – Conduct rapid (triage type) field surveys in targeted areas where wildfire risk exists. Collect data and distribute information to homeowners in targeted areas.

  • Home Assessments – Conduct detailed home assessments for individual property owners and provide follow-up reports.

  • Fuels Reduction – Participate in fuels reduction projects aimed at reducing wildfire risk. This duty may involve chipping, limbing, mowing, cutting, hauling, clearing and other physical activities required to reduce hazardous fuels.

  • Strategic groundwork – Identify, develop, and maintain areas where pre-fire work may improve containment of future wildland fires.

    Testing 3,359 fire hydrants.

  • Support ladder and hose testing.

  • Depending on qualifications, respond to brush fires.

  • Knox Box maintenance.

  • Storz hydrant adaptor installation.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

  • Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license (or the ability to obtain) and acceptable driving record.

  • Successful completion of a background check, physical, and drug screen.

  • NWCG Firefighter II qualification.


Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in the principles and practices of customer service; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public and peers.

  • Exercise appropriate judgment when initiating processes and actions within established procedures and regulations.

  • Knowledge of the Fire Adapted Communities concept, the Home Ignition Zone concept, and the goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy.

  • Experience educating, engaging, and working with diverse public audiences, including people whose primary language is not English.

  • Experience using mechanical equipment for the purpose of reducing fuels.
